Dans son film que le titre annonce très musical, Terrence Malick convoque la musique en arrière plan, derrière les relations sensuelles entre les personnages. Sans véritable construction narrative, le cinéaste immerge ses acteurs dans la musique (on voit Ryan Gosling au piano, Rooney Mara sur scène à la guitare avec Patti Smith...) mais ces scènes sont brêves, ephémères, ne permettant pas une réelle immersion musicale. Terrence Malick est le cinéaste de l'agencement de fragments hétérogènes et fugaces. Hormis les instants rock (Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Black Lips, Thee Oh Sees, Lykke Li), on entend de la musique savante (Arvo Part, Ravel, Mahler, Saint-Saens, Debussy) et de la musique de film polonaise (Wojciech Kilar, Zbigniew Preisner) pour le lien mystique entre les séquences.
