Theodore Shapiro fait la rencontre de Martin Scorsese, lequel convoque également divers artistes tels que Billy Joel, Bo Diddley, Elmore James, Eartha Kitt, Howlin’ Wolf, The Lemonheads, Cannonball Adderley, Joe Cuba, Ahmad Jamal, Romeo Void... et aussi "Ca plane pour moi" de Plastic Bertrand qui illustre une scène déjantée du film. Pour une scène où Matthew McConaughey entreprend un jeu de bouche associé à une percussion de poitrine, il improvise à partir d'une chanson, "The Money Chant", écrite par Robbie Robertson, complice du cinéaste.
