Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, leaders of the group Arcade Fire sign with Owen Pallett (here compositor and orchestrator) music of the new film of the director of DONNIE DARKO and SOUTHLAND TALES. (To listen in the video of low page).
Their score, principally orchestral (with
vocal parties) reminds of the dramatic largeness of the music composed
by Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) for THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Her importance
in picture is also comparable, Richard Kelly using long musical beaches
to create the sound ambience of the film, disturbing, mysterious and
sometimes even dreadful. The musicians / compositors, obviously
impregnated with the music of films of type of the seventies (they
sometimes think of Pino Donaggio) do not hesitate to create
"glissandis" and other dissonant effects of ropes to cause the feeling
of faintness, drawing inspiration from musical choices of Kubrick on
THE SHINING. Christallins choruses remind of the partition of John
Williams CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD TYPE while deafening horns
remind of dramatic musics of Bernard Herrmann or John Williams for the
films of Brian De Palma. A true musical shock on behalf of existent
musicians of rock, who confirm here their aptitude to blend in with a
film work while creating a partition firmly anchored in the history of
the music of film.
