Pour sa première participation à une animation Disney - suivront "Beauty and the Beast" -1991), "Aladdin" (1992), "Pocahontas" (1995), "Hercules" (1997)... - Alan Menken compose à la fois la musique orchestrale et les chansons. Pour la première, il prolonge le contexte aquatique du film (jouant sur les ondulations de l'eau, les coquillages et les sirènes), et pour les secondes, tour à tour joyeuses, nostalgiques, fiévreuses ou colériques, il choisit de les inscrire dans le style calypso/reggae correspondant à l'univers des Caraïbes.
