Carter Burwell retrouve Ethan Coen qui est pour la première fois le seul réalisateur, après avoir réalisé 13 films en duo avec son frère Joel. La partition explore des sonorités variées (la guitare typique du western, le theremin propre à la science-fiction, un orgue, la harpe évoquant les contes) et tourne en dérision le genre du thriller (deux jeunes femmes entreprennent un road trip avec à leur trousse deux criminels maladroits), se situant à mi-chemin entre "Blood Simple" et "Arizona Junior". La musique navigue entre le fantasque et la tension criminelle latente. Pour accompagner les deux protagonistes sur la route, on découvre des chansons folk et soul d'artistes féminines (Linda Ronstadt reprenant Roy Orbison ou Gary White, Diana Krall, Shannon Shaw), et même le trio synthpunk-electroclash américain connu pour ses positions féministes, Le Tigre.
